Tips on cleaning a ring?

Posted February 15, 2010 – 3:39 am in: Green Cleaning Tips

I bought this gorgeous ring about 4 years ago at walmart for like 8 bucks. The band has turned copper and discolored, and it makes a green ring around my finger. I love this beautiful ring and want to keep it. Any suggestions?

use toothpaste..it may sound weird but it works
getting the green off your finger is something you can’t help, as the ring is not made out of real gold/silver

clean it in a proprietary copper cleaner, polish it using a good metal polish like Brasso, then clean again with alcohol, and finally coat it with clear nail varnish or the plasticized ignition sealer spray, this will protect the copper and stop it and your finger going green.

because of the cost of the ring, it really wouldn’t be cost effective to get it plated. there’s nothing you can do, short of getting a metallic paint that matches the color of the ring and painting it. if you think you can live with the way it is now, you can put a coat of clear nail polish over the ring, which will stop your finger from turning green and prevent the plating from coming off even more.

Have a jeweler craft you a new ring based on the design you love but have the new ring made of real gold.

You could usually use ring cleaner solution or cloths for real jewelry-sterling, gold, platinum, and a toothbrush and paste for cleaning. But for a fashion ring, I think that washing your hands and getting it in water too often causes this problem.
I would as the person working the Jewelry counter or an actual jewelry store. Just call if you want and they could suggest something or show it to them. They may clean it on the spot and you will be very happy. You may have to have it glazed or something if it is fake. I wish I could be of more help. I have rings like that, but I just stop wearing them when this happens and keep them in my jewelry box. Sounds like you got a lot of good wear out of this one.

If you bought it at Wal-Mart and it leaves a green ring around your finger, chances are that it is FAKE. Real rings do not do that. However if you do have a real ring, an inexpensive way to clean it is toothpaste and an old toothbrush. Just brush the ring like you brush your teeth but be sure to rinse it off really well to get the toothpaste out of any creases. Stores also sell ring cleaning kits too. Be sure that if you buy a kit that is isn’t a cheap one, get a good quality kit.
