Chicken soup spill in car, now an odor, what to use?
Posted March 13, 2010 – 11:46 pm in: Green Cleaning TipsI got oriental chicken soup from a deli along with some sandwiches a few weeks ago. The idiot who packed the bag for me didn’t put the cover on the soup all the way. So, of course, on the way home from the place, I turned a corner and the bag tipped over. The lid popped off the this very, very strong smelly Korean soup poured itself all over my cloth car seats and went down the seat and in-between the back rest of the seat and saturated itself into the carpeting.
I have no stains, thank goodness, but this horrible strong smell lingers in the car.
I’ve used:
1. Resolve carpet cleaner, three times
2. McGuires car interior deodorizing clearer, four times
3. Simple Green cleaner, diluted, twice
4. Dawn Dish detergent, with warm soapy water (recommended by the dealer) and a sponge, really rubbed it in and then did a warm clear water rinse.
Nothing has worked. I would say that the Dawn seemed to cut the odor a bit. I left the car sitting with the window wide open and the sunroof open in the garage for the last three days.
I can still smell it.
So, what would you do?
I’m willing to try anything, 24 months left on my lease and I’m stuck with this.
I was thinking of Pine Sol cleaner, as it has a strong scent and maybe that would kill the smell.
I also did try a Yankee Candle clean cotton scented air freshener in there for awhile and that made me ill combined with the soup smell that lingers.
Darn car, it only has about 10K miles on it and it still had that nice “new car smell” until this.
I’ll never own a car with cloth seats again, leather for me from now on, but in the meantime……
Forgot to add that I also sprayed Febreze on it a few times, to no avail.
I’d worry that a shower cleaning product would bleach the color out of the carpet and cloth seats, so I wouldn’t dare try that. One time, I was using a shower/bathtub cleaner and leaned against the side of the tub while I was cleaning it and it acutally bleached the color out in a line across my belly, where I was leaning. So, I just wouldn’t dare do that on a 1 year old leased vehicle.

Some kind of steam cleaner/ water extractor is required to remove as much as possible with lots of water/cleaner to dilute it.
try debrezze an dkeep cleaning you have not got it out yet and really just leave the window open would help more than anything
1st off, as I tell allot of people, without proper diagnostics you cannot get a proper repair… with that being said…
2nd, there are actually 2 separate ways to get rid of smells that are in your seats. 1st is to replace the seat cover and foam with new, you might even be able to get the warranty to pay for it(hopefully), or 2, do a thorough steamclean and steamclean the &*%$ out of the seat, but take it out first and also steamclean the carpet underneath.
Good luck and hope this helps.
Your using chemicals and chemicals aren’t good for the environment and also you can use vinegar with water or oxi clean.
Ok !! Everything you have done is what I would have done Probably what has happened is that the soup has ended up through the fabric and into the cushion itself. Try renting a carpet cleaner and use the carpet cleaner solution that you can buy from the rental place. I use Pink Solution. Probably as well it could have leaked under the seat to the carpet underneath the seat. Clean that as well. Use Fabrise odor killer you can buy from a grocery store. This kills the smell permanently. All it does is mask the problem. Finally if any of these does not solve the problem then take it to a car detailer service and they will solve the problem Probably cost of about $100.
Good Luck
