How would you remove vomit smell from a recliner?

Posted March 27, 2010 – 4:43 pm in: Green Cleaning Tips

I posted this in the cleaning section and didn’t get any results, so I’m posting it here as I believe many of you may have fallen into this situation a time or two:

My two year old son drank his milk too quickly yesterday, coughed, and vomited on our recliner. I picked up the excess with a wet cloth, then scrubbed it with soapy water. After a fan dried it I realized the smell was still there. I covered it in Febreeze. When that dried, the smell was still there. Then my husband scrubbed it with a pet accident deodorizing spray. When that dried, the smell was still there. So today I dug out my Bissell Little Green Machine and sprayed it with solution, scrubbed it well with the rotating brush, and sucked up the extra water. And you’ll never guess what happened. I let it dry, and the smell was still there. It’s much lighter, but definitely still there. Are there any tips or tricks you’ve used when you’re children have had an accident to get the smell out? It is a light tan, micro-suede recliner. It was treated with an anti-stain spray at the store at the time of purchase. I don’t want to ruin the fabric, but I can’t stand to just live with the smell. Please help!

I think the best way is to remove the recliner. That should do it.

I have heard that white vinegar works. Saturate the area with vinegar and let dry. I assume the vinegar smell will evaporate, but even if not, it will be better than the vomit smell.

I’d make a bucket of half water and half white vinegar. use cold water and a thick sponge to dab it. Make sure the vinegar soaks deep and then rinse thoroughly dabbing with the sponge again. air dry and shove wads of newspaper anywhere around the spot if you can.

IF the funds allow, just have a professional company come and clean the upholstery. It would be a one-time thing.

try spraying it with rubbing alcohol or white vinegar. i use white vinegar in my cloth diaper pail and it keeps it from smelling. the alcohol will kill the bacteria causing the smell and evaporate but it could also do color damage so beware. i use rubbing alcohol for carpet stains on a beige carpet.

the problem with that sort of stain is that it has a lot of oils in it that make it hard to remove.. just go over it with the bissell and hot water mixed with a tiny bit of laundry soap and keep repeating…

the problem is that it’s probably into the batting of the recliner and you are just cleaning on the surface… i

if i got desperate I would haul that thing into the back yard and flip it over and pour a bucket of hot soapy water and degreaser on it, rinse it with the hose and set a fan on it for a few days to dry.

do the cover come off the seat cushion? if so remove the cover and wash the actual cushion.
use the bissell a few times more. Check all the little crevasses of the chair to see if there might be some vomit there hiding and clean it out.
