What are some good and commonly available GREEN cleaning products?

Posted March 11, 2010 – 3:42 am in: Cape Cod Green Cleaning News

Next semester in college, I am going to be living in a dorm room that will share one bathroom between four girls (including myself). I would like to stock our cleaning supplies with green products. If anyone has recommendations on products that are easy to find, and effective, I would love to hear them. I would love to avoid many of the chemicals, while still being able to have a sparkling clean bathroom.

Also, are there any ‘green’ air fresheners? I would think these are a bit more difficult to come by, but would think they are out there.

Thank you for any help :)

Shaklee is all about being green. Very good products that you use very little of.

I use bi-carbonate of soda and vinegar for a lot of my cleaning. If you put the soda in a shaker and the vinegar in a spray bottle, you can clean about anything. Just sprinkle with soda and spray with vinegar. Allow to fizz, then wipe off. Presto. Very green.

White vinegar and baking soda work very nicely in cleaning.

Bicarbonate of soda, white vinegar. Also salt and lemon juice . Washing soda for cleaning drains, a cup full washed down with hot water. Air fresheners, open the windows. Bicarb mixed with dish washing liquid makes a good soft scrub for the bathroom. Bicarb in an open box takes smells out of the fridge.

Method makes absolutely the best cleaners ever!

The scents are great and the products are effective yet so mild to the environment and people. Last year I got rid of my entire chemical cleaning collection and switched to Method. My allergies have improved by far and my place smells great! If you prefer unscented, try their Go Naked line.

They make great air fresheners as sprays, plug-ins and rings.

Their products are so mild that I even use their Go Naked All-purpose cleaner wipes as a personal wipe to clean my hands after gardening or on my face while hiking to freshen up.

You can buy it online or find a local retailer.

    My fave products are:

    Lemon & Ginger Floor Cleaner
    Cucumber Dish Soap
    Cucumber All-purpose Cleaner
    Mint Glass Cleaner
    Mint Shower and Tub Spray
    Mint Biodegradeable Toilet Wipes
    Sweet Grass Hand Soap
Fresh Air Laundry Detergent & Dryer Sheets
    Fresh Lychee Room Spray
    Escape Artist Body Wash
    Fresh Mint Lotion

Use distilled white vinegar for cleaning the toilet.

Use club soda in a spray bottle for cleaning windows, glass tabletops, and mirrors.

For a green air freshener, put a few drops of an essential oil in a small mist-spraying bottle of water.

Baking soda, lemon juice, salt, liquid castile soap, borax, and washing soda are all good cleaning ingredients to have.

Buy a non-petroleum based dish soap like Seventh Generation or a similar brand.

    For disinfecting surfaces, either use:
    1) Rubbing alcohol–not non-toxic and natural, but less bothersome than many chemical products like Lysol and ammonia, and fairly cheap.
    2) Vodka–yes, the kind you can drink–the natural alcohol alternative, but pricier, OR
    3) First spray with white vinegar, then spray with hydrogen peroxide (do not use on stone surfaces like marble). Hydrogen peroxide will degrade with light, so just put a sprayer on top of the bottle it comes in.

Use bluing instead of bleach for making whites whiter in the laundry.
