What is a good, green cleaner to wash kitchen walls?

Posted March 19, 2010 – 8:45 am in: Cape Cod Green Cleaning News

I want to wash my kitchen walls to remove all the hardened on cooking grease, especially around the stove. Dish soap takes a lot of scrubbing, the cheap degreasers I can afford work little better. I would like to use a green product that has minimal smell, as a family member has asthma. Can anyone suggest a good product? Thank you.

Two products used together will make this job a breeze, I promise.

GreenWorks, all purpose natural cleaner by Clorox and a Mr Clean Magic Eraser will wash your walls with ease. You’ll see.

    I. Wall Cleaner – This formula will safely clean painted walls and wallpaper (provided it is washable wallpaper). Source: http://www.bendigobank.com.au/public/generationgreen/sustainable_living/goods/use-non-toxic-cleaners.asp

    1 cup water
    1/2 cup vinegar
6 drops of your favourite citrus essential oil
Combine all ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake before each use. Lightly spray where needed and wipe clean with a damp cloth.

    2. This is what we always used with great success:

    Recipe For Cleaning Walls

The best I have ever found is from the “Queen of Clean” herself.

    1 gallon water
1/2 cup washing soda (in laundry aisle, next to Borax)
    1/4 cup ammonia
    1/4 cup vinegar
Wash in a circular motion, starting at the top and work your way down so you don’t leave nasty dirt streaks. Believe me, this works! I have never seen my walls so clean. I have used washing soda and baking soda and they both work wonders.
    Lemon Ammonia

When washing my walls I use lemon scented ammonia with water. Half and half. This really cuts through grease and doesn’t leave a film.

I recently had to clean a LOT of grease in my new house (I don’t think the previous occupants ever cleaned). I pretreated with vinegar – let that sit for a bit, then used citra-solve (I think that’s what it’s called?). Citra solve is basically citrus oil. It’s supposed to be diluted, but there was so much grease I mainly used full strength.

Also, you may want to scrape off a layer with a putty knife (yuck). That’s what I had to do first. Scraped right off after the vinegar pre-treat.
