What is a really strong green cleaner?
Posted March 26, 2010 – 8:45 am in: Cape Cod Green Cleaning NewsI just moved into a new apartment and some of the doors and light switches are really greasy and gross. regular Simple Green isn’t doing it. Any other products cut through crusty nastyness?

Several ideas; first try using a microfiber cloth. I get mine at Sam’s Club. Get a bundle of 24 for less than $10. But you can buy them in a lot of stores. Get the ones with the most “loops” on them you can. The loops get in the texture of things and clean better. Then just try the cloth, hot soapy dishwater and see if that helps.
Or if you have access to a steamer, use that with a microfiber cloth. I have a steamer and using that got trim and such clean that nothing else would touch!
And you could try the Mr. Clean eraser sponges, they might work but I would be prepared to have to repaint the door if you use these, they tend to take the “gloss” off painted surfaces.
Or try a little Barkeepers Friend. It’s a powdered cleanser made from rhubarb leaves that much more gentle than a scouring powder. I’d take the light switch cover off first; water and electricity that close together could be a shocking experience. It’s cheap and works on a lot of different things. Dampen the switch cover, sprinkle the product, rub it around with a sponge to cover the area and let it work for 15 or so minutes and then come back and give it a scrub. Rinse well, let dry and reinstall the cover.
Anything citrus based (orange is better than lemon) is great for cutting thru grease. It is a natural product, not expensive or harmful to your skin.
It works really well with microfibre cloths. Too many loops will get caught on things. I find the ‘car’ ones re the best and use them for everything (bathroom, mirrors, dishes)
DONT use anything steam or water related on switches, woodwork or wallpaper!
Straight orange peel oil will strip paint but can be washed out with water.
Maybe you might want to clean the apartment with some industrial strength cleaner that can kill germs and bacteria. You don’t have to use a strong amount just a tiny bit in a bucket of water. Melaleuca has good natural products ( tough and tender and sol-u-mel my favs) for cutting grease but difficult to buy since they don’t sell it in stores. 1 tbsp of bleach to a gallon of water one time won’t kill you, but the germs in the apartment might.
