Fish Tank turning Yellow?
Posted April 14, 2010 – 4:49 pm in: Green Cleaning TipsHiya guys
My tank is 220L, has been setup for about 6 months now, everything has been perfect.. I did a PH test last week and that came back at 7. Suddenly over a few days it started turning a yellow / green colour. I went to fish shop and got some Algae treatment for green water, Did a water change about 80% and it cleared about 90% but after 3 days the water has gone back to yellow. I don’t overfeed, and only feed them every 2 – 3 days.. I do feed them, Flakes, Pellets for the Cat Fish and Algae waffers for the plec.. I’ve only feed them flakes since the water change.. I also have live plants and rocks and the subtract is sand.. My dad also has a 220l tank with the same, rocks, plants and the same sand, and his PH is also 7, and his tank is crystal clear. I do clean my tank every Sunday, suck up all the crap of the sand etc. I have to filters in my tank, 1 is for 120l and the other is for 200 – 400l (Only 1 week old) Anyone have any ideas?
My Fish stats are –
1 Common Plec
1 Red Tail Shark
3 Baby Silver Sharks
4 Serpia Tetras
2 Catfish (4 Months Old)
2 Gourami Small
4 Silver Tips
1 Baby Swordtail
4 Guppies
2 Blue Rams
1 Balivian Ram
2 GlowLight Tetras
1 Clown Loach
All are small fish apart from the Plec, Cats, Red Tail Shark and Clown Loach

clean it
You shouldnt be so worried ive seen tanks with yellow/brown colored water
if you have driftwood that thats probably where its coming from since driftwood that hasnt been boiled or is still a lil alive then it gives of some chemical i forgot its name that turns the water brownish yellow
some fish love this like discus and angelfish
some fish dont give a damn
some fish dont like it but wont die
if you dont have any driftwood then maybe someone peed in it
just kidding
hope i helped
P.S. if you do have driftwood you can boil it to get rid of the yellow water
P.P.S i dont know how long to boil it
Yellow water is caused by pollution.
Your tank is way over stocked, so I’m going to guess this is the culprit.
Let’s go through your list:
1 Common Plec
- Grows to be over a foot long, and needs 75 gallons (285 liters) minimum. These are big on the pollution scale.
1 Red Tail Shark
-Fine for your size tank, but needs to be the only shark.
3 Baby Silver Sharks
-Need a very minimum of 120 gallons. (455 liters.)
4 Serpia Tetras
-Fine for your tank size. Need to be kept in groups of 6 or more.
2 Catfish (4 Months Old)
-What kind? Some catfish grow to be huge, some need to be kept in groups, some are aggressive…
2 Gourami Small
-Depending on the kind, may be aggressive to each other and/or other fish.
4 Silver Tips
-Silver Tip what? Tetra? Shark? Other? I’ll assume they’re Tetras, in which case, again, you need 6 or more of them.
1 Baby Swordtail
-Likely to get eaten.
4 Guppies
-Fine.
2 Blue Rams
-OK
1 Balivian Ram
-Is quite likely to fight with your Blue Rams, especially if it and one of the Blue Rams are male.
2 GlowLight Tetras
-Again, 6 or more.
1 Clown Loach
-Needs a larger tank, and to be kept in groups of 3 or more.
My suggestion:
Return/re-home your Common Pleco, Silver Sharks, Clown Loach, and maybe your Catfish.
Up All of your Tetras to at least 6 of each kind. (If they’re Corys, you’ll need at least one more of them, though 6+ is ideal.)
Call it a day. That’s enough to fully stock your tank.

Its just organic build up..
totally normal for a planted tank…
Its totally harmless aswell and usually an indication of overdosing liquid ferts just a little bit.
Carbon cleans it up overnight so maybe putting in a sack once in a while is okay for your planted tank.
If you want the yellow out but not have the fert stealing effect of carbon seachem makes stuff called purigen that really works well but dam is it expensive.
it says it can be recharged by soaking in bleach but if you don;t rinse it well it sounds like a pending fish tank disaster so i never did.
Aswell never do a 80% water change, its too upsetting to the stability of the fish tank.
cheers…
